EU Eco-Labeling Requirements — Guide 2026

EU packaging regulations require businesses to include specific eco-label texts on product packaging sold in EU member states. The required language depends on the country of sale — in Germany labels must be in German, in France in French, etc. Our generator provides legally appropriate label texts for the most common packaging materials and disposal instructions.

WEEE — Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU) requires all electrical and electronic equipment sold in the EU to display the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol and a text instruction not to dispose of the product with household waste. The text must appear in the language of the country where the product is sold. Failure to comply can result in product recalls and fines.

Packaging Recycling Labels

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 (replacing Directive 94/62/EC) sets requirements for packaging recyclability information. From 2028, harmonised EU-wide labels will be mandatory. Currently, each member state has its own labelling requirements — Germany requires dual system markings, France requires the Triman logo and sorting instructions, Belgium requires the Green Dot (Grüner Punkt / Punto Verde).

Plastic Packaging — New EU Rules from 2025

The EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (2019/904/EU) requires specific markings on plastic packaging including labels indicating the plastic type and recycling instructions. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation introduces mandatory recyclability labelling by 2030.

Paper and Cardboard — FSC and PEFC

While FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certifications are voluntary, they are increasingly required by retailers and B2B buyers across Europe. Our generator provides standard recycling text for paper and cardboard packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which EU countries require eco-labels in local language?
All EU member states require packaging labels in their official language(s) for products sold domestically. Germany requires German, France requires French, Belgium requires both French and Dutch, Poland requires Polish, Spain requires Spanish, Italy requires Italian. Products sold in multiple EU countries typically need labels in all relevant languages.
Is the WEEE symbol mandatory on all electronics?
Yes. The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol (WEEE symbol) is mandatory on all electrical and electronic equipment sold in the EU under Directive 2012/19/EU. This includes chargers, cables, batteries, household appliances, IT equipment, and telecommunications equipment. The symbol must be clearly visible and permanent.
Do I need eco-labels for products sold online?
Yes. EU packaging regulations apply regardless of the sales channel. Products sold online and shipped to EU consumers must have compliant packaging labels. The applicable language is determined by the country of the recipient (buyer), not the seller's country.
What is the Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is an EU initiative under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) that will require products to carry a QR code linking to detailed sustainability data. DPP requirements will roll out progressively from 2027, starting with batteries, textiles, and electronics. Use our QR Generator tool to create the required QR codes for your products.
